Listening Post - October 2009
We want to answer your questions about the upcoming Growing Faith campaign.
You can reach the listening post to submit questions here
OR
call the church office at 585-223-1203.
What is Growing Faith?
It's the theme of our 2009 financial campaign. We do one every year, but this one is different because
it includes our second capital campaign. Rather than run two campaigns, our regular one to support
our Ministry, plus a second one to continue to pay the mortgage on our expanded building, we’ve
combined them into a single campaign. And just like our new building, the purpose of the campaign is
Growing Faith.
We recently had a Building Faith Campaign. Why are we having another one?
When we began our building expansion in 2006, we expected to have campaigns every three years
to pay the mortgage. The commitments we made in 2006 are coming to an end. Those original
commitments were about Building Faith via our expanded facility. Now we’re Growing Faith through
the expansion of our Ministry made possible by our bigger facilities.
How much did Building Faith raise?
Building Faith was the theme of our 2006 campaign and it resulted in $1.1 million in financial
commitments toward our total building cost of $2.7 million. That difference, plus the interest is why we
envisioned a series of campaigns to pay off the mortgage.
Have we kept up with our financial commitments from the Building Faith campaign?
Our congregation has faithfully kept its commitments and our payments are right on schedule.
Has the usage of our church increased?
Our vision for the new facility has blossomed just as intended. While our own use of the building has
increased, the number of outside groups using our church has nearly doubled. Groups such as
Heritage Christian Homes have begun to use our new facilities, while old friends like the Girl Scouts
and AlAnon have remained. Our new member classes have been bigger than they have been for
years, probably doubling our prior growth rate. Watch for more on this in our next communication.
What can my family do together to help the campaign?
Make prayer your first priority. Pray individually and together that we will respond to His call on our
lives. Pray that everything we do in this campaign will be consistent with God’s expressed design
found in His Word. Pray about your sacrificial gift, and have faith that God will provide. Brainstorm
creative ways to give to the campaign. Ask your kids to drink one less soda a week or make the
decision to eat out as a family less. Designate an envelope or container that should be used to gather
the money saved from these decisions and encourage your kids to deposit the money during the
week and then count it before giving it to the campaign.
When will financial commitments be received and for what time period will we be asked to give?
Commitment Sunday is November 22nd. This will be the time when most people will make their
estimate of giving. We’re seeking two financial commitments:
- A commitment for 2010 to support of our ongoing ministry
- A commitment for 2010, 2011 and 2012 to support our mortgage payments
The church leadership will not publicly ask for financial commitments, nor will anyone confront you or
pressure you into a commitment. Your giving is between you and God and should come about as a
result of much prayer. If we approach this campaign properly it will be a rewarding and exciting time
of spiritual growth as a church.
I pay my current three year Building Faith campaign pledge on a weekly basis. Since this
pledge was from April 2007 through March 2010, and the Growing Faith campaign pledge
starts in January 2010, there will be a three month overlap with the current campaign. How
should that be handled?
The last three months of your existing pledge will be excused and we ask that you submit a new
pledge for the next three calendar years (2010, 2011 and 2012). We ask that you prayerfully consider
maintaining or increasing the level of your new pledge.
Are there creative ways to give that I haven’t thought of?
Yes. Many times major gifts in the form of investment securities, real estate, or other assets are
committed in a campaign such as this. In fact, you may benefit from favorable tax treatment for the
contribution of appreciable assets. Check with your tax consultant or financial advisor regarding your
specific situation.
How do I make my commitment?
You’ll receive a commitment card that can be turned in during the special worship service on
November 22nd, or mailed to the church.
What can I do now?
Pray for our efforts to meet God’s calling for our church, and learn how this building is benefitting our
mission, outreach, ministries and community.
