Listening Post - November 2009

We want to answer your questions about the upcoming Growing Faith campaign. You can reach the listening post to submit questions here OR call the church office at 585-223-1203.

What is Growing Faith?
It's the theme of our 2009 financial campaign. It represents the dream of our church ministry as we grow into our newly renovated building. We run a financial campaign every year, but this one is different because it includes our second Capital Campaign. Growing Faith combines the needs of the 2010 Operating Fund and the next phase of the Building Fund (our mortgage payments from 2010 to 2012).

How much did the first Capital Campaign raise?
The Building Faith Campaign in 2006 raised $1.1 million to be paid from 2007 to early 2010. The total cost of our building renovation was $2.8 million so the remainder was financed with a mortgage from Presbyterian Investment and Loan Program.

Why have a second Capital Campaign?
We have to continue to pay the mortgage. Our payments are expected to be about $183,000 per year over the next three years, for a total of about $550,000. If we pledge $750,000, we will be on our target plan to pay off our mortgage early.

What created the debt we are paying off?
Our original building was built in 1988, with that mortgage paid off in 2003. Our expansion in 2008 created the debt we are now paying off. We hope to pay this off in 15 years as well, thus saving over a half million dollars in interest.

A question was raised about hoped for giving levels in this campaign being less as compared to our last campaign.
In fact, our goal for the building portion of this campaign is about 30% less than our original campaign. In an earlier Q&A brochure we included the comment – “We ask that you prayerfully consider maintaining or increasing the level of your new pledge.” because while our goal for the building component is less in this campaign, we recognize that some among us may find it hard to maintain their current gifts while others may be able to increase them. Our hope is that each family will prayerfully consider and then offer pledges (one toward the Building Fund and one toward the Operating Fund) that represent their joy in God, their thankfulness for the work of God being done, and their sense of leading by God. As always the actual amounts offered will be different for everyone. If people are able to do the same or more than last time we will be blessed and we will be able to save more down the road. A phrase found in some of our campaign literature is: not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice.

I pay my current three year Building Faith campaign pledge on a weekly basis. Since this pledge was from April 2007 through March 2010, and the Growing Faith campaign pledge starts in January 2010, there will be a three month overlap with the current campaign. How should that be handled?
The last three months of your existing pledge will be excused and we ask that you submit a new pledge for the next three calendar years (2010, 2011 and 2012).

How do I make my commitment? Is it confidential?
In mid November, you will receive a packet including two commitment cards, one for the Operating Fund and the other for the Building Fund. Please fill out both cards and bring them with you on Commitment Sunday, November 22nd. Otherwise, return them in the self addressed envelope to Al Norby, the Church Financial Secretary. He is the only person that will know your commitment, it will be held in the strictest confidence.

Can my commitment be changed during the three-year period?
Your commitment is an intention to give only. At any time in the three year period, you may adjust your pledge up or down by contacting the Financial Secretary.

Should I pledge on a weekly or monthly basis?
Pledges may be paid weekly, monthly, annually, in one lump sum – whatever is most convenient for each family. Payment for the building fund can be distributed unequally over the three years (eg 20%, 30%, 50%). You may also want to consider transferring stocks or other appreciated assets. For more information, contact Al Norby.

Will I be billed for my pledge?
No. Records will be kept by the Church Financial Secretary and he will make a statement available to you periodically so you can track your progress.
