Perinton Presbyterian Church was chartered by the Presbytery of Genesee Valley on September 18, 1983, with 96 members. The church was formed after a survey conducted by the Presbytery determined support for a Presbyterian church in the Fairport/Perinton area. The Reverend David Gellert became the first pastor of the church and led the congregation for the next twelve years.
Worship services and church school were held in the Fairport Masonic Hall during the early years. A building site for a new church was selected on Pittsford-Palmyra Road with groundbreaking taking place in April, 1987. The congregation joyfully moved into this centrally located and visible building on July 10, 1988.
As church membership increased and programs continued to grow, the need for calling an Associate Pastor was determined. A search for an Associate culminated with the installation of the Reverend Barbara (Bobbi) Tobin who left Perinton Presbyterian Church in November, 2000 to become Pastor of Irondequoit Presbyterian Church.
Another change occurred when Reverend Gellert announced in April, 1995, that he had accepted a call to a church in Pontiac, Michigan. The Reverend Steven Becker was called to become our new pastor and was installed on February 9, 1997.
The growth of Perinton Presbyterian Church during the past 17 years has been exciting. Christian Education is a vital and active part of our church life, encompassing church school, junior and senior high fellowship, and adult education classes. An outstanding choir directed by Don Besig adds to the beauty and meaning of the worship service. There are a variety of social events that take place during the year that impact all of the age groups. There are also small groups which meet for mutual support, Bible study, and fellowship. These activities bring our church together as a family in Christ while mission support in the community and beyond enables us to reach past our walls. Perinton Presbyterian Church enthusiastically looks forward to continuing growth.
